Skin cancer: serious. The protective hat? Not so much ...

That bright thing in the sky is the sun.

And that giant thing obstructing you from seeing the sun, a sort of man-made eclipse? That's my hat.

I am sorry. I regret to inform you: I have become a giant hat person.

It is big. It is round. It is sombrero-like. There are rings of Saturn smaller than my hat. Small airplanes could land on its brim. Next week, stop by after 1 p.m. for a free frappuccino because a Starbucks is thinking of opening there.

The giant hat, ordinarily reserved for cowboys and Indiana Jones and the mariachi band that sometimes plays your favorite Mexican restaurant, is new this summer. And already I feel like I am years late in joining this exclusive club.

The Centers for Disease Control suggests in nearly every bit of paperwork to wear a hat with a wide brim to help prevent skin cancer. Studies have found a hat also keeps ticks at bay.

Skin cancer among young adults is on the rise. More than 50 percent of those ages 18 to 39 report having a sunburn in the past year. (And by my own experience, that sounds ridiculously low.) Sunburns, unfortunately, are not unusual. For me, they're as frequent as pizza on a Friday night.

This summer, the temperature has been unrelenting. Again. And if you believe - like I do - that this weather is not some kind of statistical anomaly, well, get used to it. And then get used to my giant wide-brimmed hat.

Better yet, get your own. The wide-brim hat is here to stay. It's the hat of the future.

Mine is beige. Khaki if you must. I bought it last year on sale from the clearance rack at REI. It is floppy and washable. I have a giant noggin, and it fits nicely.

I am fair-skinned, not quite translucent, but more like an unmuddied baseball. I generously apply sunscreen, but it washes off, rinses off, sweats off. It can be hard to remember. Turtlenecks seemed impractical. So I converted to the Wild West look. I wear a hat.

Do I look ridiculous? Yup.So much of my face is in the shadows I might as well be Batman.

But look again. Instead, see me as an adventurer off to explore untamed lawns and carefully curated beachs. By the squint in my eyes, you can tell that I am staring off into the great vast wilderness of Hampton Roads, into some baseball game in the park, some fire pit waiting for a party, some beer that needs a koozie.

Look again and I am a cowboy wrasslin' with a grocery bag from the back seat, oblivious to an unforgiving and blistering sun.

Look again, and one of my neighbors is asking: "Mike, why's your hat so big? Does that thing get DirecTV?"

Laugh now, kemosabe. You have seen my kind. Pale. And in a hat. Not just at the beach, but in the yard, at your party, walking the dog, even strolling indoors past a large window.

Is it embarrassing to wear a giant hat instead of, say, a cap that mentions my favorite team? Sure. Have I heard the taunts from those who want to see my skin turn a pinkish strawberry color? Undoubtedly.

"Enjoy the safari, Grusser!" their eyes scream when I'm walking the 10 feet to the mailbox. Or, "Are you going to the Kentucky Derby?" - to which my eyes yell back, "I will see creatures of which you cannot even fathom when you are dead from cancer!"

We must accept the wide-brim hat just like we accept rolled-up short sleeves that highlight your tattoos. It is a staple of modern fashion. And safety.

I wear my hat today in hopes of looking ridiculous again tomorrow.

(AP) ? The queen and James Bond gave the London Olympics a royal entrance like no other Friday in an opening ceremony that rolled to the rock of the Beatles, the Stones and The Who.

And the creative genius of Danny Boyle spliced it all together.

    Brilliant. Cheeky, too.

The highlight of the Oscar-winning director's $42 million show was pure movie magic, using trickery to make it seem that Britain's beloved 86-year-old Queen Elizabeth II had parachuted into the stadium with the nation's most famous spy.

A short film showed Daniel Craig as 007 driving to Buckingham Palace in a black London cab and, pursued by the royal corgis, meeting the queen, who played herself.

"Good evening, Mr. Bond," she said.

They were shown flying in a helicopter over London landmarks and a waving statue of Winston Churchill ? the queen in a salmon-colored dress, Bond dashing as ever in a black tuxedo ? before leaping into the inky night over Olympic Park.

At the same moment, real skydivers appeared as the stadium throbbed to the James Bond theme. And moments after that, the monarch appeared in person, accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip.

Organizers said it was thought to be the first time she has acted on film.

"The queen made herself more accessible than ever before," Boyle said.

In the stadium, Elizabeth stood solemnly while a children's choir serenaded her with "God Save the Queen," and members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force raised the Union Jack.

Boyle sprang another giant surprise and picked seven teenage athletes for the supreme honor of igniting the Olympic cauldron. Together, they touched flaming torches to trumpetlike tubes that spread into a ring of fire.

The flames rose and joined elegantly together to form the cauldron. Fireworks erupted over the stadium to music from Pink Floyd. And with a singalong of "Hey Jude," Beatle Paul McCartney closed a show that ran 45 minutes beyond its scheduled three hours.

Organizers said the cauldron would be moved Sunday night to the corner of the stadium where a giant bell tolled during the show.

Boyle turned the stadium into a giant juke box, with a nonstop rock and pop homage to cool Britannia that ensured the show never caught its breath.

The high-adrenaline soundtrack veered from classical to irreverent. Boyle daringly included the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" and a snippet of its version of "God Save the Queen" ? an anti-establishment punk anthem once banned by the BBC.

The encyclopedic review of modern British music continued with a 1918 Broadway standard adopted by the West Ham football team, the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Bohemian Rhapsody," by still another Queen, and other tracks too numerous to mention, but not to dance to.

The evening started with fighter jets streaming red, white and blue smoke and roaring over the stadium, packed with a buzzing crowd of 60,000 people, at 8:12 p.m. ? or 20:12 in the 24-hour time observed by Britons.

Boyle, one of Britain's most successful filmmakers, who directed "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Trainspotting," had a ball with his favored medium, mixing filmed passages with live action in the stadium to hypnotic effect, with 15,000 volunteers taking part in the show.

Actor Rowan Atkinson as "Mr. Bean" provided laughs, shown dreaming that he was appearing in "Chariots of Fire," the inspiring story of a Scotsman and an Englishman at the 1924 Paris Games.

There was a high-speed flyover of the Thames, the river that winds like a vein through London and was the gateway for the city's rise over the centuries as a great global hub of trade and industry.

Headlong rushes of movie images took spectators on wondrous, heart-racing voyages through everything British: a cricket match, the London Tube and the roaring, abundant seas that buffet and protect this island nation.

Opening the ceremony, children popped balloons with each number from 10 to 1, leading a countdown that climaxed with Bradley Wiggins, the newly crowned Tour de France champion.

Wearing his yellow winner's jersey, Wiggins rang a 23-ton Olympic Bell from the same London foundry that made Big Ben and Philadelphia's Liberty Bell. Its thunderous chime was a nod to the British tradition of pealing bells to celebrate the end of war and the crowning of kings and queens, and now for the opening of a 17-day festival of sports ? London's record third as host.

The show then shifted to a portrayal of idyllic rural Britain ? a place of meadows, farms, sport on village greens, picnics and Winnie-the-Pooh, A.A. Milne's bear who has delighted generations of British children tucked warmly in bed.

But that "green and pleasant land," to quote poet William Blake, then took a darker, grittier turn.

The set was literally torn asunder, the hedgerows and farm fences carried away, as Boyle shifted to the industrial transformation that revolutionized Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries, the foundation for an empire that reshaped world history. Belching chimneys rose where only moments earlier sheep had trod.

The Industrial Revolution also produced terrifying weapons, and Boyle built a moment of hush into his show to honor those killed in war.

"This is not specific to a country. This is across all countries, and the fallen from all countries are celebrated and remembered," he explained to reporters ahead of the ceremony.

"Because, obviously, one of the penalties of this incredible force of change that happened in a hundred years was the industrialization of war, and the fallen," he said. "You know, millions fell."

Olympic organizers separately rejected calls for a moment of silence for 11 Israeli athletes and coaches slain by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

The parade of nations featured most of the roughly 10,500 athletes ? some planned to stay away to save their strength for competition ? marching behind the flags of the 204 nations taking part.

Greece had the lead, as the spiritual home of the games, and Team Great Britain was last, as host. Prince William and his wife, Kate, joined in thunderous applause that greeted the British team, which marched to the David Bowie track "Heroes." A helicopter showered the athletes and stadium with 7 billion tiny pieces of paper ? one for each person on Earth.

Both Bahrain and Brunei featured female flagbearers in what has been called the Olympics' Year of the Woman. For the first time at the games, each national delegation includes women, and a record 45 percent of the athletes are women. Three Saudi women marching behind the men in their delegation flashed victory signs with their fingers.

"This is a major boost for gender equality," said the International Olympic Committee president, Jacques Rogge. These are his last games as head of the IOC. He steps down in 2013 after completing the maximum two terms.

Rogge honored the "great, sports-loving country" of Britain as "the birthplace of modern sport," and he appealed to the thousands of athletes assembled before him for fair play.

"Character counts far more than medals. Reject doping. Respect your opponents. Remember that you are all role models. If you do that, you will inspire a generation," Rogge said.

The queen then said: "I declare open the games of London, celebrating the 30th Olympiad of the modern era."

Last month, the nation put on a festive Diamond Jubilee ? a small test run for the games ? to mark her 60 years on the throne, a reign that began shortly after London's last Olympics, in 1948.

Former world heavyweight champion and 1960 Rome Olympic gold medalist Muhammad Ali was cheered when he appeared briefly with his wife, Lonnie, before the Olympic flag was unfurled.

Some 8,000 torchbearers, mostly unheralded Britons, had carried the flame on a 70-day, 8,000-mile journey from toe to tip of the British Isles, whipping up enthusiasm for a $14 billion Olympics taking place during a severe recession.

The final torchbearers were kept secret ? remarkable given the scrutiny on these, the first Summer Games of the Twitter era.

The show's lighter moments included puppets drawn from British children's literature ? Captain Hook from "Peter Pan," Cruella de Vil from "101 Dalmations" and Lord Voldemort from J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, as well as Mary Poppins.

Their appearance had a serious message, too ? the importance of literacy.

"If you can read and write, you're free, or you can fight for your freedom," Boyle said.

Boyle's challenge was daunting: To be as memorable as Beijing's incredible, money-no-object opening ceremony of 2008, the costliest in Olympic history.

"Beijing is something that, in a way, was great to follow," Boyle said. "You can't get bigger than Beijing, you know? So that, in a way, kind of liberated us. We thought, 'Great, OK, good, we'll try and do something different.'"

Substances and methods used in doping

LONDON (Reuters) - The International Olympics Committee (IOC) said on Saturday that 1001 drugs tests have been conducted since the start of the London 2012 Olympic period on July 16.

Of these, 715 were urine tests and 286 were tests on blood.

IOC President Jacques Rogge says a crackdown on doping cheats in the run-up to the London Olympics has been a success, with testers catching more than 100 athletes using performance-enhancing drugs in recent months.

Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku became the first athlete to be ejected from the London 2012 Olympics on Saturday after traces of the anabolic steroid stanozolol were found in his urine sample.

Substances and doping methods are banned when they meet at least two of the three following criteria: enhance performance, pose a threat to athlete health, or violate the spirit of sport.

Following are some of the substances and methods used for doping in sport:

    ERYTHROPOIETIN (EPO)

    * EPO is a peptide hormone that is produced naturally by the human body. EPO is released from the kidneys and acts on the bone marrow to stimulate red blood cell production.

    * By injecting EPO, athletes aim to increase the concentration of red blood cells and consequently their aerobic capacity.

    * EPO abuse can lead to serious health risks for athletes. It is well known that EPO, by thickening the blood, leads to an increased risk of several deadly diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, and cerebral or pulmonary embolism. EPO has been implicated in the deaths of several athletes.

    CERA

    * Continuous Erythropoiesis Receptor Activator, or CERA, is a third-generation form of EPO. As opposed to earlier forms of the drug, CERA requires less frequent injection because it has an extended half-life.

    * Athletes may take CERA to increase oxygen-carrying capacity to boost endurance. It may also be used after training to encourage swifter recovery.

    ANABOLIC STEROIDS

    * Anabolic steroids are drugs that resemble testosterone, a hormone which is produced in the testes of males and, to a much lesser extent, in the ovaries of females.

    * Because testosterone and related drugs affect muscle growth, raising their levels in the blood could help athletes to increase muscle size and strength. Athletes who use anabolic steroids also claim they reduce body fat and recovery time after injury.

    * Anabolic steroids can cause high blood pressure, acne, abnormalities in liver function, alterations in the menstrual cycle, decline in sperm production and impotence in men, kidney failure and heart disease. They can also make people more aggressive.

    * Examples of anabolic steroids include testosterone, stanozolol, boldenone, nandrolone and clostebol.

    HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE

    * Human growth hormone (hGH)- also called somatotrophin or somatotrophic hormone - is a hormone that is naturally produced by the body. It is synthesized and secreted by cells in the anterior pituitary gland located at the base of the brain.

    * The major role of hGH in body growth is to stimulate the liver and other tissues to secrete insulin-like growth factor IGF-1. IGF-1 stimulates production of cartilage cells, resulting in bone growth and also plays a key role in muscle and organ growth. All of these can boost sporting performance.

    * Commonly reported side effects for hGH abuse are diabetes in prone individuals, worsening of heart diseases, muscle, joint and bone pain, hypertension and cardiac deficiency, abnormal growth of organs and accelerated osteoarthritis.

    DIURETICS

    * Diuretics can be used in a sport as a masking agent to prevent the detection of another banned substance.

    * As well as masking other drugs, diuretics can also help athletes lose weight, which they could use to their advantage in sports where they need to qualify in a particular weight category.

    * Examples of commonly used diuretics include furosemide, bendroflumethiazide and metolazone.

    SYNTHETIC OXYGEN CARRIERS

    * Synthetic oxygen carriers, such as haemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) or perflurocarbons (PFCs), are purified proteins or chemicals that have the ability to carry oxygen.

    * They are useful for emergency therapeutic purposes when human blood is not available, the risk of blood infection is high or when there is not enough time to properly cross-match donated blood with a recipient.

    * The misuse of synthetic oxygen carriers for doping purposes carries the risk of cardiovascular disease in addition to serious side effects such as strokes, heart attacks and embolisms.

    BLOOD DOPING

    * There are two forms of blood doping. Autologous blood doping is the transfusion of one's own blood, which has been stored, refrigerated or frozen, until needed. Homologous blood doping is the transfusion of blood that has been taken from another person with the same blood type.

    * Although the use of blood transfusions for blood doping dates back several decades, experts say its recent resurgence is probably due to the introduction of efficient EPO detection methods.

    * A test for homologous blood transfusions was implemented at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

    * The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) says it is funding research into developing a test for autologous transfusions, and it is also leading the development of so-called "biological passports" which keep a record of an athlete's blood and biological variables over time.

    INSULIN

    * Insulin enhances glucose uptake into the muscle and aids the formation and storage of muscle glycogen. Athletes might use it for events that require high levels of endurance. There is also evidence that it is abused by dopers in conjunction with growth hormones or anabolic steroids to boost muscle growth.

    * Misuse of insulin can lead to very low blood sugar levels - a condition known as hypoglycaemia which can lead to the loss of cognitive function, seizures, unconsciousness, and in extreme cases can lead to brain damage of death.

    GENE DOPING

    * Advancements in gene therapy for medical reasons mean potential cheats might seek to undergo procedures to modify their genes to enhance their physical capabilities.

    * While it is not yet known whether it has ever been done in practice, gene doping could in theory be used to increase muscle growth, blood production, endurance, oxygen dispersal and pain perception.

    * Gene doping is defined by WADA as the transfer for nucleic acids or nucleic acid sequences, and the use of normal or genetically modified cells. There are currently no testing methods capable of detecting gene doping.

Volkswagen earnings growth slowed by tech costs and euro crisis

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's Volkswagen AG suffered a slowdown in underlying profit growth in the second quarter, as costs of a technology overhaul and Europe's deepening debt crisis weighed on the car maker's earnings.

Operating profit grew 3.4 percent to 3.28 billion euros (2.56 billion pounds), less than the 10 percent achieved in the first quarter but beating an average analyst forecast of 3.20 billion, as earnings increased at luxury marque Audi and VW's namesake brand - the group's two biggest divisions.

Shares in VW, maker of models ranging from the Up city car to the Bentley Continental ultra-luxury sedan, were down 2 percent at 130.75 euros by 1021, while the European sector as a whole <.sxap> was down 1.2 percent.

"VW's broad global presence and its cost-saving production patterns are the best recipe during a crisis," said Frank Schwope, an analyst at Hanover-based NordLB. "The results are strong but sales gains may slow in the second half, even at VW."

Europe's largest car maker increased first-half deliveries across its multi-brand group by 8.9 percent to 4.45 million autos. The Wolfsburg-based company has a goal of boosting sales to 10 million vehicles by 2018 and to surpass Toyota Motor Corp and General Motors Co to become the world's biggest car maker.

"Our strong position in international markets will enable us to outperform the market as a whole, despite the challenging environment," said VW Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn in a statement.

Winterkorn's success in leading VW meant he enjoyed a near doubling of his pay last year to 17.5 million euros including bonuses, making him the top-earning chief of any of Germany's top 30 companies.

    GROWING SALES

Benefiting from expanding operations in China, the United States and eastern Europe, VW's second-quarter group revenue surged 19.2 percent to 48.05 billion euros, reflecting growing sales of models such as the VW Tiguan and Audi Q3 compact SUVs and Audi's A6 sedan.

The manufacturer reaffirmed its view that deliveries and revenue will increase this year, while repeating a goal to match last year's record operating profit of 11.3 billion euros.

VW's results suggest the group is weathering the crisis while mass market rivals including Ford Motor Co and PSA Peugeot Citroen are floundering.

Ford on Wednesday almost doubled the loss it expects to incur in austerity-strapped European markets this year to more than $1 billion, a situation that will cause overall operating earnings to fall rather than hold steady in 2012.

Battling with overcapacity and sagging demand, Peugeot posted a 662 million euro first-half auto-division loss as it plans to weed out 8,000 French jobs and close a factory near Paris. Europe's No. 2 car maker had already announced 6,000 European redundancies last year.

Conversely VW's Spanish division Seat managed to shrink its quarterly operating loss by more than half to 13 million euros while boosting deliveries 20 percent to 119,000 vehicles.

Yet VW is also bracing for a tougher second half as sagging customer demand and growing discounts hurt manufacturers. VW's six-month group deliveries in western Europe excluding Germany declined 5.7 percent.

VW is engaged in pricing actions to promote the expiring Golf hatchback ahead of an overhauled version of its best-selling model due to hit showrooms in the final quarter.

The company is faced with upfront costs for a new architecture to assemble small and medium-sized vehicles that may absorb about 15 billion euros of costs through 2016, almost a quarter of total planned group spending of 62.4 billion on plants, products and equipment.

"The new modular building kit places a considerable weight on earnings in the short run but will prove a boon over time," NordLB's Schwope said.

The new technology will enhance VW's use of component-sharing and help reduce production costs 20 percent and assembly times 30 percent, VW has said.

    3 Tips For B2B Branding Through Social Media | Business 2 ...

We?re all familiar with the term ?branding,? or at least with the nearly?infinite number of brands we come across in our daily lives. ?For example, take a quick look around your desk or work area right now. ?If your desk is like mine (well, hopefully a lot more organized and less cluttered than mine), you will see different items, each with a brand name. ?A telephone, a box of tissues, pens, even your computer ? each comes from a company or organization. ?Some brand names share the same name as their company and others are recognizable as products from a known company. ?Consumers are a lot more familiar with some names/brands than others. ?Why? ?My guess is that the popular companies employ more clever advertising techniques, have better marketing budgets, or perhaps it comes down to them being just plain lucky. ?B2B branding has mixed reviews ? from skeptical to supportive ? but in my opinion, B2B branding through social media is definitely taking off and the results are looking positive.

TopRank Online Marketing sums up the desired outcomes of B2B branding rather well: ??Building a recognizable B2B brand pays off in the form of long-term increased referrals, positive brand conversations on both digital and in-person channels, web traffic and sales.? ?(Click here for full article). ?Social media knowledge and usage continues to grow in leaps and bounds within B2B. ?The time is right for all businesses ? large or small ? to utilize B2B branding through social media. ?This is a novel, efficient, and pragmatic way for businesses to distinguish themselves ? by having their brands ?out there? in the social media universe. ?This is especially true since potential client bases and ultimate decision-makers are also becoming increasingly more astute in their usage of internet search and social media platforms.

The following are 3 tips for B2B branding through social media:

    1) Remember that businesses are ?human.??

Keep in mind that behind every business is a person ? a real person who experiences emotions and who wants someone to really listen and understand them in regards to their pain points. ?Social media offers easier ways for businesses owners or executives to reach out to their audiences. ?They can then offer up their company?s message in ways that are less pushy or intimidating than most direct-marketing tactics to prospective clients. ?After the relationship is initiated, social media then provides superior ways to more thoroughly engage with the decision-makers within the business, allowing them to express themselves and their needs.

    2) Make your business and its offerings stand out from those of your competition.

Remember what I said above in regards to how some brands have become a lot more recognizable than others? ?There are probably many analytics and metrics that show the reasons why this is the case. ?Whatever the reason, these companies have somehow made themselves stand out and this certainly makes a difference in their sales and ROI. ?Social media now provides many ways to differentiate your company from the rest ? either through memorable?YouTube?videos; excellent blog content; memorable Twitter and Facebook posts ? the opportunities are endless.

    3) ?Demonstrate that your business is noticeable, credible and likeable

Your business has a name, a logo, and maybe even a tag line. ?These are very important elements of a successful business, but will mean nothing if no one sees, believes, or likes you. ?Social media gives businesses a way to advertise and promote themselves in acceptable ways. ?Ads can be purchased to be displayed on?Facebook?and?LinkedIn, for example. ?As well, a company can publish and broadcast its blog posts via platforms such as?Twitter?to draw people towards their websites. ?When social media is used in moderation, a business can be seen as a leader in its industry and can gain a favorable reputation, both among its clients and its competitors.

These are just a few tips for B2B branding through social media. ?I would be glad to hear from you about others that have either worked or flopped for you and your business!

For Asia's tech giants, clouds before the windows

    SEOUL/TOKYO | Mon Jul 23, 2012 11:56am BST

SEOUL/TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian PC makers are set to report mostly higher quarterly profits in the coming weeks, but economic worries and delays in computer purchases before the launch of Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system in October are casting a pall over their earnings ahead.

Lenovo and other PC makers from the region have made inroads on U.S. competitors Dell and Hewlett-Packard. But uncertainty about Windows 8, the devices running the system and the pricepoints are seen dampening sales of PCs before the launch, and may even discourage users from buying until they have been tried and tested in the market.

"We think that Win8/RT and Ultrabooks will not stimulate PC demand," Jefferies analysts wrote in a research note on Monday, although they did anticipate seasonal demand in the third and fourth quarters.

China's Lenovo, which is due to announce first-quarter earnings in mid-August, is expected to report a net profit of $131.2 million, up 21 percent from $108.8 million a year earlier, according to the average estimate of 10 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Lenovo's hope is that second- and third-tier cities in China, where PC penetration is relatively low, will be able to provide support. "Going forward it will be increasingly harder for Lenovo to sustain similar growth rates in an environment of limited unit growth and low elasticity," Bernstein Research said in a report.

Taiwan's Acer is expected to post a net profit of T$591.9 million ($19.8 million) for the second quarter, according to a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S poll, up from T$331 million in the first quarter and swinging from a T$6.79 billion loss a year earlier.

But Acer's focus on the Intel-inspired Ultrabook notebook computers worries some analysts, despite the promise of greater margins.

"Unless prices of the Windows 8 Ultrabook lower to a mainstream level of $699, sales will not be promising," warned Jenny Lai, an HSBC analyst in Taipei.

    MOBILE DEVICES

South Korea's Samsung Electronics, which flagged a record April-June quarterly profit earlier this month, is likely to report further profit increases in the second half of this year, as it expands sales of its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone and is set to provide processors and displays for Apple's new iPhone expected later this year.

The head of Samsung's mobile division, JK Shin, told Reuters on Sunday that sales of the Galaxy S III, which went on sale in late May, are likely to top his initial forecast of 10 million units by the end of July.

Others likely to benefit from being a supplier to Apple include flat-screen maker LG Display and SK Hynix, both of which are expected to lead the panel sector's recovery in the second half of this year.

LG Display is likely to report its seventh-consecutive quarterly loss on Thursday, as one-off costs related to price-fixing charges added to a weaker-than-expected recovery in demand. But with panel prices stabilizing, and the expectation of another iPhone in the works, the company is likely to return to profit in the third quarter, although weak demand in the TV market, its biggest earnings generator, is set to crimp upside potential, analysts say.

SK Hynix, the world's No.2 computer memory-chip maker, is set to report a small quarterly profit on Thursday, ending three quarters of losses, as computer chip prices have started stabilizing amid industry consolidation led by U.S. rival Micron Technology Inc.

LG Electronics has gained market share in its television business from Japanese producers in recent quarters, making it the world's second-biggest TV maker, and is expected to report on Wednesday that quarterly profit has more than doubled. But its handset business has swung to a loss, squeezed by growing competition from low-cost producers in China and at the high end by Apple and Samsung.

"LG Electronics could be one of the biggest losers in the Korean tech sector as its smartphone business is likely to continue to remain in the red in the second half due to growing competition from the likes of Apple and Samsung," said Park Sung-min, an analyst at Kyobo Securities.

"But it'll likely cope better with the challenges than smartphone rivals Research In Motion and Nokia, for example, as steady cash flow from profitable TV and home appliances businesses will provide some support."

    JAPAN TV WOES

Japan's Sony, Panasonic and Sharp are also looking for other profit centers as their results for the quarter and the full year will still be dominated by the performances of their laggard TV units.

All three are pulling back from the product that made them global brands, hit by intense competition from foreign rivals led by Samsung Electronics. Combined, the three companies expect to sell 7 million fewer TV sets this business year than last.

To make up for that lost revenue and to generate new growth sources, Sony is looking to cameras, gaming consoles and software, as well as smartphones and other mobile devices. Panasonic is targeting household appliances, batteries and solar panels. Sharp, the maker of Aquos TVs, is looking for salvation through its partnership with Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industries.

Their turnaround efforts, however, are threatened by a fragile global economy and the unresolved debt crisis in Europe, investors say.

"Overall their performance looks disappointing," said Makoto Kikuchi, CEO of Myojo Asset Management in Tokyo.

"Having seen results in the U.S., the impact of the European crisis and the loss of steam in emerging economies appears to be having an impact. The best we are likely to see for Japan's electronics firms are in line with projections or struggling to keep on track with their forecasts," he said.

Sharp will tumble to a 44.4 billion yen ($565 million) first-quarter operating loss from a 3.5 billion yen profit a year earlier, according to the average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. For the full year ending in March 2013, Sharp has forecast an operating profit of 20 billion yen.

Sony is seen posting a first-quarter operating profit of 17.6 billion yen, down from 27.5 billion a year earlier, according to the average forecast of five analysts. Panasonic will see first-quarter operating profit jump to 40 billion yen from 5.6 billion yen, three analysts predicted on average.

For the full year, Sony expects operating profit of 180 billion yen, and Panasonic has forecast 260 billion yen. ($1 = 29.9755 Taiwan dollars) ($1 = 78.5650 Japanese yen)

Tooks Bernasconi talks to you about skill gaming online and how it can

Further information about the skill gaming online industry can be obtained by writing Devane Seiber@www.law.corn, or by searching the net with your favorite search engine. Heidema Aina from www.dhhs.gov states it best: ?We want all of this to be simple and risk to be nominal. The main area in which people have difficutly is assessing their wealth and risk factors. Far too often, we see skill gaming online investors jumping into a portfolio that is far too aggressive. The end result can be disasterous, invoking many to file bankruptcy.? Another tip is based on the idea of dollar cost averaging skill gaming online portfolios, which is a strong modus operandi in the stock field. The theory is simple and it can payout nicely if investment is done on a consistent basis. Dollar cost averaging for skill gaming online investments is best leveraged over a 3 year period, where the investor can choose to buy more shares monthly or bi-monthly. Then, it is necessary to consider the end game. Skill gaming online investing is risky, but becomes more so when money is needed for basic needs. ?Give yourself a nice cussion of cash and retirement income?, suggests Lounder Sproul of www.businessobjects.com, ?Personally, I save about 10% each month for retirement, 20% as liquid cash for everyday needs, and another 40% for investing. This may sound very demanding, especially with regard to skill gaming online investments, but in actuality it is really a reflection of what you want for your future, not necessarily what you want now.? All in all, success with investments in the skill gaming online industry come with time. Rarely do people see quick returns, and rarely do people with skill gaming online portfolios lose a lot either. ?Essentially,? remarked Artman Braisted, ?we?re looking at the long term here. Quick wins are for lotteries and penny poker games, not the skill gaming online investment market. I think, given enough time, those who invest in this area will see good returns for their skill gaming online money.? ?My top tip is making baby steps before giant leaps?, reports Casaceli Liew a top analyst from www.science.gov, ?By starting slowly, your risk factor is greatly diminished, and financial commitment is much lower. You can get out at any time with minimal losses, or move forward into more risky skill gaming online areas with good fundamental knowledge.? Second only to this idea is the wealth factor, a key indicator showing one?s ability to actually breach the skill gaming online market and get in while the ?getn?s good?. The wealth factor is simply an expression of one?s income and disposable figured by a skill gaming online tolerance or risk factor. Then, based on this tolerance level, an appropriate amount of startup skill gaming online capital can be allocated. ?The motivation to have money from a skill gaming online portfolio in the future is great,? counters Winston Brinsfield, ?but don?t forget that you can?t live in the future forever. Many people fall into the trap of not meeting basic needs in the present, which, logically means that their future will become progressively more difficult.? Winston Brinsfield is author of the the famous skill gaming online How-To guide ?Make skill gaming online investments work for you, and retire wealthy?, recently seen in magazines across the country. Robledo Lowndes of the HOQYT facility recommends starting out slowly with skill gaming online purchases and moves, and then moving more aggressively into the market once substantial skill gaming online real estate has been acquired. Be sure to also look at other active markets aside from the skill gaming online sector you may follow. By diversifying your portfolio, you diversify your risk and hence can tolerate losses in one skill gaming online area by making gains in another. Seecharran Kocon of www.osu.edu recommends diversifying with three to six various skill gaming online companies, and as many different skill gaming online mutual funds. ?I invest heavily in areas that look promising, but also proportionately balance my risk by putting some money in standard investments, such as stocks, bonds, and money market funds?, states Seecharran Kocon. All the while, we?ve always wanted answers about skill gaming online and how to better manage such issues. Now, for the first time in ages, Massart Grasse will supply you with exclusive skill gaming online commentary that can?t be beat!

Tips To Help You Find The Perfect Home | Overseas Property

There are many real estate experts, but they aren?t necessarily geniuses. Many of these same experts either oversaw, or were deeply involved with, the housing crash. Check out these tips to help you navigate the waters of the real estate game.

A house that is close to a busy road should be avoided if possible. These homes are less expensive, but they can be a horrible home to live in for many reasons. You may not mind the noise, but it could be hard to sell these homes if you needed to.

Ask your Realtor if they can give you a checklist. Many Realtors have checkoff lists available that include all steps of home-buying, including finding the perfect house and mortgage procedures. The checklist can help you organize everything before you go forward to make sure you have everything.

Make sure the seller verifies the square footage and other important information about the home before you purchase it. Make sure the listed square footage is in compliance with public records. A number is considered valid if the difference is not more then about a hundred square feet. If it is more than this, then you might want to consider another property or do some research to figure out why the number as off.

A simple method in starting your process in real estate buying is to get organized. Use a notebook to write information in that you gathered from online, newspapers, friends and your agent. This is a great method as it helps keep all of you information that you have gathered in one place.

Use a calculator on the Internet to figure out what your price range should be when you want to buy a house. These tools let you put in the amount you make, your expenses, and your debt. When you obtain information that narrows down the purchase price you should consider for your home, try to stick to that number or less so that you make sure you stay within financially reasonable boundaries.

Make sure ahead of time that you can come up with the down payment your mortgage company will need. Otherwise you will be required to pay for private mortgage insurance. This can add quite a bit of extra money that you would have to pay on a monthly basis to show the bank that you are able to make payments on your mortgage.

As previously mentioned, it?s not always wise to rely on the self-styled professionals in the real estate field. If they were such hot shots, why was there a real estate bubble burst to start with? Stay away from people who ?know everything? Stick with time-tested strategies that have proven themselves safe and

Cathedral of Notre Dame in Rouen. @ 2012 Ralph Grizzle

Today, as yesterday, Avalon Creativity is docked in Rouen, tied up along the scenic and pedestrian-busy waterfront, just steps away from the heart of the ?city of 100 spires,? as the writer Victor Hugo characterized the capital of Upper Normandy more than a century ago.

We did not see all of the spires or each of the 800 classified buildings and countless half-timbered houses, but we did see enough to know that this is a city that we?d like to visit again.

There?s a ton of history here: The writer Gustav Flaubert was born here and wrote Madame Bovary more than 150 years ago. I remember reading the then-strange book while a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1891-1895, Claude Monet lived in an apartment across from the Cathedral of Notre Dame. He chose the apartment as a vantage point to capture on canvas the west facade of the iconic cathedral. And Jeanne d?Arc, more popularly known in the English tongue as Joan of Arc, was burned at the stake and martyred here in Rouen.

We learned this and a lot more on a exceptionally well-done morning tour of Rouen.

We visited Saint-Maclou?s A?tre, a cemetery dating back to the 14th century for victims of the Black Plague. We went inside the impressive 11th-century Church of Notre Dame, roamed Rue St. Romain with its impressive half-timbered houses from the 15th to 18th centuries, visited a memorial to the heroine Joan of Arc and saw the very spot where she was burned at the stake at the age of 19.

History combined with charm is perhaps what Rouen serves up best, and there is plenty of both here. I heard more than one person in our tour group remark that this was a place they could live. I echo those remarks.

Rouen is a city of roses and ruins, a place of impressionable beauty (to use the artists? words) with a living history and perhaps a few ghosts from the past.

As we travel through Normandy, I can?t help but think that we are in a place that straddles the threshold of creativity (think Impressionists) and destruction (today we visit the Landing Beaches from Rouen). This must truly be one of the richest regions in the world ? at least for my son Alex and me as we continue exploring for a couple more days before ending a wonderful month together in Europe.

Following is our day in pictures from yesterday in Rouen.
