Robber picks wrong time to hit Oroville credit union

OROVILLE -- An Oroville man allegedly tried to rob a credit union on Monday, but an off-duty police officer was doing his banking there at the same time.

Officer David Bryning took the suspect to the floor, and with assistance of another customer, held him until more police could arrive and take the suspect into custody, according to a press release from the Oroville Police Department.

It happened about 10:30 a.m. at Sierra Central Credit Union, 1036 Oro Dam Blvd.

Bryning saw a man ? later identified as Alexander Scott Sears, 48 ? walk into the bank wearing a hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses and a stocking hat.

A bank employee asked Sears to remove his hoody and sunglasses. He refused, and allegedly placed a bag on the counter, announced the robbery and asked that the bag be filled with money.

He did not display any weapons.

Bryning heard the man say it was a robbery and ask for money, said Lt. Al Byers.

That's when Bryning grabbed Sears and took him to the floor.

Sears was charged with attempted bank robbery and booked into Butte County Jail with a bail of $50,000.

Sears doesn't have a serious criminal history in the online case files for the Butte County Superior Court.

"He wasn't a frequent flier with us," Byers said.
