Swedish online retailer says demand for Nokia Lumia 920 twice that seen for the Samsung Galaxy S III

Over the last few days, a picture has emerged of incredibly strong demand for the new Nokia Lumia 920. Telstra sold out of the device, calling demand for the phone "beyond amazing." In Germany, the phone also sold out and in the U.K., it topped the charts at retailer Expansys. It would appear that Swedish retailer Dustin has been experiencing the same heavy demand for the phone. Marcuz Martinez, the online firm's product chief, said in a private Facebook chat that "Demand is absolutely huge for this phone," adding that the store has twice the backlog of orders for the Nokia Lumia 920 than it had for the Samsung Galaxy S III.

This is a very good sign for those Windows Phone fans who have been hoping that one of the new models would spark demand for the platform the same way that the Motorola DROID helped Android take off in 2009. Android 2.0 was installed on that phone and the green robot never looked back. Now comes the important part for Nokia which is making sure that enough product does become available in a timely fashion before phone buyers give up and start looking elsewhere.

It is a similar problem to what is happening with the Google Nexus 4, which is back in stock today at T-Mobile and the Google Play Store. The only difference is that Android has already proven itself and there is no pressure. Windows Phone 8, on the other hand, is trying to claw its way up and make a name for itself in a very competitive industry and Nokia itself cannot afford to lose these potential sales. For now though, this is a marvelous sign for Microsoft and its Finnish partner.
